4 Ways Leaders Can Stay Positive and Calm Amidst Crisis

by | Leadership

Leaders should serve as pillars of strength in an organization. Their courageous acts and bold determination inspire their followers to be strong and positive. But of course, it doesn’t mean that leaders do not feel scared or weak like the rest of us. There may be times when they get overwhelmed with the tasks at hand. As a leader, it is definitely not easy to put up a strong stance in the midst of uncertainty, but it is certainly doable by following a few tips:

Manage your emotions.

The first things to take note of are the things you can control and one of those is how you choose to react to a problem. Instead of panicking or fleeing, it is best to show everyone the importance of staying calm and collected during a distressing situation. This practice can help you avoid having an emotional breakdown and at the same time be a good example to others.

Be deliberate.

In times of a crisis, worried followers turn all their eyes on the leader and wait for the implementation of swift solutions. Many may pressure you to act hurriedly but giving in to their demands can lead to hasty decisions that can just worsen things. Even during emergencies, do not forget the value of taking time to think things through before making any drastic action. Taking things one at a time and slowing down a bit to review the problems can help you make a wise decision.

Prioritize self-care.

Leaders need a clear mind and strong body to withstand the responsibilities of managing a team. While trying to implement measures to solve a problem, you can expect good leaders to even double their effort. However, working too hard can leave anyone weary and exhausted. You cannot afford a burnout in times of a crisis so staying in the best condition is part of your duty as a leader. As you do your best to take care of others, do not forget your own needs by getting proper nutrition and enough rest.

Seek a mentor’s help.

It is often a mistake to try to do everything. Thus, when faced with an obstacle that seems too huge to handle, seeking help from others is one of the smartest moves to do. So whenever you feel the need, do not hesitate to turn to a reliable mentor for assistance. A mentor can keep your spirits up and provide wise advice. They can also offer a fresh approach and efficient solutions to solve a problem.

With the big responsibilities on their shoulders, leaders may even get more anxious and worried during times of chaos, crisis, or failures.  Yet it is also in times like these when their group needs them the most. Thus, it is part of a leader’s duty to be a living example of strength and resilience.
